What does "direct" and "indirect" cleaning mean?

Direct cleaning means that the parts are suspended or placed in a basket which is then submerged and cleaned in a tank filled with detergent. Direct cleaning is limited insofar as that a solution must be chosen that will not damage the cleaning bath.

Indirect cleaning involves placing the parts to be cleaned into a seperate, non-perforated container that is then placed inside the bath. This container can be filled with a solution that is not meant to be mixed with the primary bath for either contamination or cost reasons.

How is the correct cleaning time validated?

The length of the cleaning cycle depends on various parameters such as f. ex. the type of soiling, the detergent, the temperature as well the required cleanliness. The removal of the soiling is visible to the naked eye and should begin immediately after the ultra-
sonics have been switched on.

The cleaning time is an easy to change process variable. Often however it is abused in order to compensate for other process parameters that are badly optimised. Even though experienced operators are able to estimated cycle times for new applications, they should be validated for the actually used detergent and the specific type of soiling of the parts at hand.

Is a rinsing phase obligatory after every cleaning phase?

A rinsing phase always belongs to a cleaning process because it removes possible chemical residues (i.e. detergent) or residual soilings still adhering to the parts to be cleaned. The rinsing phase can be accomplished by spraying, with ultrasonics or simply by manual immersion. Tap water can be used for the rinsing process. If however, the part’s surface has to achieve a certain degree of purity, DI-water is recommended.
